Ghoti Gorom - The quintessential munchy of Kolkata

Ghoti-gorom is a typical Bengali munchy that is sold by sellers, moving around while ringing a bell. The seller carries a medium (drum shaped, usually made of aluminium)  container holding the exclusive ingredients like jhuri bhaja, onion, coriander leaves, raw mango, carrots, chills, masala, chopped onions, peas and nuts, lemon juice, etc. Inside the large container, rested a small metal jug with slow burning coal. The hot coal is placed into the jhuri bhaja, that makes the jhuri bhaja warm and unique.

The seller, mixes the ingredients together and serves you warm in a small newspaper portion made into a cone. The warm jhuri bhaja combined with sweetness of the carrots, tangy-ness of the raw mango, along with the hotness of the chilies creates a unique flavor that makes you munching for more. Ghoti-gorom is also known as ghorom chanachur at many places.

I managed to get hold of a ghoti gorom guy near my college making the awesome snack. Here's the video of the same. Enjoy!

Here's a quick recipe of Ghoti Gorom sure to tantalize your taste buds.

Bengali sweet and sour or spicy chanachur (mixture) : 1 cup
Jhuri bhaja/sev (little thicker one and not the nylon sev) : 1/2 cup
Peanuts halved: 1/4 cup
Chopped onion: 3 tablespoons
Chopped green chilies: 3-4
Chopped coriander leaves: handful
Chopped cucumber: 2-3 tablespoons
Lemon juice: 2 tablespoons
Black salt: few pinches or as per taste
Roasted cumin and red chili powder( bhaja moshla) : 1 tsp
Chaat Masala : 1 tsp
Red chili powder: few pinches
Amchur Powder: a pinch
Mustard oil: 1 tbsp
The quantity of all the ingredients can be altered as per your taste preferences.

Although people can enjoy the quick snack at most public places like bus stops, railway stations, parks, etc, but there are a few spots in the city of joy where this is just iconic. Like the one above in the picture at the Howrah Ferry Ghat. Or during an evening stroll on Princep Ghat. Somehow, our city has an affection for this snack the most when they are close to the waterfront. 😊😊😊
